The UTEP Miners received some terrible news as it was discovered sixth-year senior Braxton Amy sustained a season ending injury in their game against the Houston Cougars Friday. A spokesperson for the team said Amy tore his achilles tendon and would miss the rest of the year, effectively ending his career as a miner.
Now the UTEP defense has one less senior leader on a squad that was helpless against the dynamic Houston Offense.
Head Coach Mike Price said it may not have been how good Houston played as much as it was how bad UTEP's D was.
"I'm just surprised at how the defense played and how we didn't attack them how we are capable of doing. How we're going to do it from now on. This isn't going to happen again. Whether we get beat or not, that might happen. But we're not going to play defense the way we played it Friday night," said Price.
Now his team's focus turns to NMSU and the Battle of Interstate 10. Aggies head coach DeWayne Walker was already thinking ahead to UTEP after their game against San Diego St. on Saturday.
"We're going to have our hands full defensively just because of their style of offense. Offensively, I think with what we are doing on offense, I think we're going to be able to score a few points on them to be honest with you," said Walker.
The Rivalry for the Silver Spade and Brass Spittoon is this Saturday, 7pm, at the Sun Bowl.
