Boy Named Lou picked a lucrative time to break his maiden by unleashing a wire to wire score in the $50,000 Getaway Stakes racing 870 yards at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on closing day Tuesday.

The three-year-old New Mexico-bred son of Gonna Ro Sham Bo broke like a bullet under jockey Casey Lambert and relished the one turn distance. Breaking from the #1 post position, Boy Named Lou took a clear lead rounding the turn for home and opened up a 3-length cushion. Despite his odds of 14-1, the improving Quarter Horse was rolling comfortably and glided home a three-quarter length winner. Lambert rode the winner perfectly allowing the former maiden to take a breather midway through the feature. Loyal supporters of the upstart received a healthy $30.20 on a $2 win ticket.

Trainer Mike Joiner performed a terrific job in preparing Boy Named Lou for the distance with a series of workouts and one bumpy maiden race going 870 yards on March 16. Boy Named Lou made his seventh career start a lucky one. He earned $30,000 for owners Joe Dee Brooks, Ted Rushing and R. Lee Lewis. He sped through the stakes in a fast 44.970 seconds, good for a 95 speed index.

The stakes placed Thoroughbred D E Lover closed with interest in the final 100 yards but ran out of real estate. The New Mexico-bred son of So Long Birdie finished a fast closing second under jockey Miguel T. Fuentes, Jr. The runner-up trained by Tony Sedillo found his best strides in deep stretch. D E Lover completes a productive meet with 1 win, 2 second and 1 third in 6 starts. The versatile runner was second in the $85,000 Red Hedeman Mile and third in the $85,000 Pepsi Cola Handicap earlier this season.

The speedy Infinite Bull ran a bold third, beaten just over one length. The even money favorite was ridden by Jorge Rocha and completed a $1 trifecta worth $504.90. Executive Trust failed to muster a strong bid and finished fourth.

35-1 long shot Super Candy closed out the 2013-14 Sunland Park live racing season with a surprising win in the $25,000 Adios Amigos Claiming Handicap going one and one quarter miles. Jockey Dusty Shepherd rode the route lover for trainer Todd Fincher. He paid $73.40 to win. 2010 San Juan County Commissioners’ Handicap winner Tizsosexy ran a terrific race to finish second for trainer Gerald Richards. The 25-1 shot completed a $1 exacta worth $356.10.
