Back Seat Roll trounces foes in $85,000 Enchantress Stakes

Back Seat Roll trounces foes in $85,000 Enchantress Stakes
Sports
Sunday, December 16, 2012 - 6:23pm

Back Seat Roll trounced her foes with a powerful final quarter mile and came home a 3 and 1/2 length winner in the $85,000 Enchantress Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.

The accomplished stakes winning filly had no problems negotiating the one mile trip in her first attempt around two turns. The daughter of Roll Hennessy Roll relaxed kindly for jockey Enrique Gomez down the backstretch. When Gomez asked for run, his filly delivered a commanding performance and pulled away from her rivals at will. The 3-5 favorite was coming off big stakes win at Zia Park and Ruidoso Downs, and she was well prepared on Sunday by trainer Henry Dominguez.

Back Seat Roll scored her fourth consecutive win and should be the leading New Mexico-bred two-year-old filly of 2012. Her Enchantress victory was worth $51,000 for owners Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas. The stylish filly has won over $207,000 in her freshman season. Her impressive record stands at 4 wins, 1 second and 1 third from 6 starts. Back Seat Roll should be in for a promising three-year-old campaign in 2013.

Todd Fincher’s Desertsmagic produced a gallant run to earn second place honors with jockey Casey Lambert in the saddle. The runner-up finished with good energy but was no threat to the winner. The Desert God filly earned $18,275 for owners Dale Taylor and Lee Lewis.

Dandy Devona R F, the Dessie and Fern Sawyer Futurity winner, found her best strides in deep stretch. She and jockey John Rochabrun wound up third, beaten 7 lengths.

Little Bit Southern made no mistakes and successfully defended her title in the $85,000 Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Handicap at 400 yards. With an alert start, Little Bit Southern and jockey Salvador Martinez held off a late bid from Wonwabbitwon to win by a neck in a time of 19.078 seconds. The high quality mare by Southern Corona found her top form to annex the lucrative stakes races for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares. The durable multiple stakes winner picked up a $51,000 paycheck for owner Edilberto Estrada of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is trained by Miguel Castillo.

Let go at nearly 7-1 odds, Little Bit Southern returned $15.40 on a $2 win ticket. She has earned over $314,000 in her very productive career.

Wonwabbitwon finished a very strong second under jockey Alejandro Medellin. The hard charging Rabbits Rainbow mare finished a half length in front of Snow Regard. Wonwabbitwon was also second in her previous race – the New Mexico Cup Fillies and Mares Championship at Zia Park. Call Me a Blazn Chic, the heavy favorite at 3-5, broke slowly and never fired. The half million dollar stakes winner finished well back in seventh place.

Live racing resumes on Tuesday at 12:25 p.m.
