Aztec wrestlers must fundraise to attend Nationals

El Dorado wrestlers Trey Smith and Trevor Rios have a great chance to attend Nationals, earn All-American status, and possibly attract top colleges or universities.  Hard work, dedication, and money are needed to actually get to the National Championships, which begin Wednesday in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Rios is a junior, and finished with the Bronze medal at the UIL State Championships at the 138-lb division, while Smith, a senior, earned fifth place.  Local school districts will not help fund a trip to Nationals because that meet is not UIL sanctioned, according to SISD athletic director Ron Durkes.

Smith and Rios have been fundraising, but selling chocolates for $1.00, fun books with local business coupons for $20.00 and accepting all types of donations. Through donations and sponsorships, they have collected about $1000, or half of the money needed to attend nationals.  It's a problem all wrestlers in the borderland are having.
