Aggies Win Home Opener in Overtime over Nevada
In the second overtime match of the season, the New Mexico State soccer team defeated Nevada, 2-1, for its first WAC victory of 2011. Junior forward Yolanda McMillion scored the game-winning goal in the Aggies' conference home opener.
NM State improved to 8-6-1 and 1-2-0 in the WAC in its first overtime match at home this season and first in league play, while the Wolf Pack fell to 3-12-0 and 1-2-0.
McMillion secured the Aggies' first-ever win over Nevada with her fourth score and second game winner of the season in the 97th minute. She scored on a corner kick from freshman midfielder Amber Harrington.
"We needed to get back on track in the conference," head coach Blair Quinn said. "We were the only team after two games that didn't have points yet, now we do. I think there's a pretty big logjam tied for first and second. We are right back in the thick of things, and that was really important."
In the first half, the Aggie offense was aggressive and capitalized before the break. Senior forward Cassandra Branch gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute with a breakaway goal. She utilized her speed to record her second score of the season and first in WAC play. NM State outshot Nevada, 7-3, and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.
The Wolf Pack tied the match, 1-1, to force overtime with a goal in the 88th minute of action.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wosick earned her first WAC win of the season with a pair of huge saves.
The Aggies continue WAC play and host Idaho, Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. inside Aggie Memorial Stadium.
