Aggies Volleyball Improves to 6-1 in WAC
The New Mexico State volleyball team swept San Jose State (25-14, 25-15, 25-19) at the Pan American Center, Saturday, Oct. 15, to move to 17-5 overall and 6-1 in Western Athletic Conference play.
The Aggies, who lead the league in opponent hitting percentage, held the Spartans to a .183 hitting percentage while hitting .392 with 48 kills on the afternoon. Freshman Meredith Hays led the way for the Aggies with a match-high 17 kills and tallied a .394 hitting percentage. Senior Kelsey Brennan had a stellar match with 11 kills on 17 attempts and only one error for a .588 hitting percentage.
NM State out blocked the Spartans 5-2 and tallied five service aces. Senior Jennah DeVries had a match-high 38 assists and was one of five Aggies to post six or more digs. Senior libero Kelsi Phillips had a match-high nine digs to go along with an assist.
After falling behind 2-1 in set one, sophomore Stephanie Ziegler marked her first of eight kills to tie it up at two-all. NM State would not lose the lead again until it was 2-1 in set No. 3. The Aggies dominated set two by going up 6-1 and never looking back. NM State hit .419 as a team in the second set and added two blocks and two service aces.
The Aggies head back out on the road taking on Louisiana Tech, Saturday, Oct. 22 at 8pm (MT) in Ruston, La.
