Aggies Volleyball Falls 3-1 to No. 12 Pepperdine

Aggies Volleyball Falls 3-1 to No. 12 Pepperdine
Sports
Saturday, September 8, 2012 - 3:48pm

The New Mexico State volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 23-25, 23-25) to No. 12 Pepperdine on day two of the Rams Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., Saturday, Sept. 8.

NM State posted 55 kills in the match and had a better hitting percentage than the Waves (.262-.250) but made mistakes throughout the match that cost the Aggies the victory. Sophomore Meredith Hays marked a match-high 22 kills and added one service ace with four total blocks to score 25.5 points on the afternoon. Junior Lauren Loerch had a great match chipping in with 19 kills and a .459 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Taylor Livoti marked a team-high 25 assists and posted her second double-double of her career as she added 17 digs, as the Aggies ran a 6-2 offense again. Junior setter Ciara Brown added 21 assists and two service aces on the day.

NM State also out-blocked the Waves 10.5-9 with red shirt freshman Gwen Murphy marking five total blocks to lead the way.

"Overall a few our players played well and I liked a lot of what we did," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Pepperdine did a good job of slowing us down, but I think it was a pretty even match and we can take away a lot of positives from this. We just have to continue to work and get better."

The Aggies hit .565 and had four solo blocks with six total blocks in set one to defeat Pepperdine 25-16. Hays led the way hitting .833 in the set with five kills, while Loerch tallied four kills on six attempts without an error to hit .667. NM State took an early 4-2 lead and extended it to 13-7 when Hays hammered down a kill. The Waves seemed frustrated with the NM State offense with the Aggies posting 15 kills and only two errors on 23 attempts.

Set two saw the Aggies fall 25-22, although NM State had its chances. The Aggies took an 11-9 lead, but Pepperdine rallied and tied it up at 14-all. There were 11 ties in the set with the last tie coming at 17-17. Pepperdine scored three consecutive points to take a 20-17 lead before winning the set.

Hays posted eight kills in set No. 3 and added four but it wasn't enough as the Aggies fell 25-23 in a tough-fought battle. The set was tied 13 times and there were five lead changes as NM State played well defensively digging up 15 balls and blocking two. The Aggies took a 20-19 lead but a 6-3 run by the Waves was just too much for NM State to overcome.

NM State took an early 4-1 lead in set four before ties at six, seven, and eight. The Aggies regained the lead at 15-12 on a Preslie Alexander kill but Pepperdine showed why it is the No. 12 team in the country when it tied the set at 17-17. The Aggies allowed Pepperdine to go on an eight point scoring rally late in the set before falling 25-23. Middle hitter Gwen Murphy marked six kills in the set, although NM State was held to a .154 hitting percentage.

The Aggies wrap up the Rams Classic with a match against host team Colorado State, Sunday, Sept. 9 at 12 p.m. (MT). Live stats and a Twitter feed with in game score updates will be available online. For all your Aggie information, go on the Internet at www.NMStateSports.com.
