Saturday, January 14, 2012 - 11:08pm

The New Mexico State University Indoor Track and Field team wrapped up its first meet of the season at the Texas Tech Invite on Saturday, Jan. 14, with three first place finishes.

Senior Melanie Clay finished first overall in the 800m with a time of 2:21.18 to claim first place for the Aggies. Junior Courtney Schultz finished first overall in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:06.90, with Camille Schultz finishing in second place with a time of 5:10.62. Junior Deserae Cota captured first place for the Aggies in the triple jump with a distance of 11.04m.

NM State also earned 11 top-five finishes in events throughout the weekend. Junior Samantha Thompson finished fifth overall in the 800m with a time of 2:25.02. Courtney and Camille Schultz finished second and fifth respectively in the 1,000m run with times of 2:55.39 and 3:03.0. Senior Madelyn Stoltze finished second with a time of 10:51.04 and freshman Tamara Lementino finished fourth with a time of 11:02.89 in the 3,000m. Sophomore Zoe Meade finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.78m. Senior Bellosie Frazier finished third in the shot put with a distance of 12.66m and second in the weight throw with a distance of 16.79m.

"Overall it was a good start," said head track and field coach Orin Richburg. "It gave us a good indicator for our future training."

The overall success for NM State came from both the core group of veterans, as well as the younger athletes. Four of the top five finishes by Aggies came from seniors. Lementino's fourth overall finish in the 3,000m, as well as a seventh overall finish by freshman Jenna Banegas in the 55m, highlighted the talent of the freshman athletes and the depth of the roster.

"We showed some good signs today, but we still have a couple events we have to sharpen up," Richburg said. "The main thing we were pleased with was the mentality and the fierceness everyone brought to the board today."

The Aggies will return to Las Cruces to prepare for the Cherry & Silver Invitational, which is set for Friday, Jan. 20, in Albuquerque, N.M.
