Aggies Softball Falls 6-1 in Las Vegas

Friday, March 1, 2013 - 2:29pm

An early home run gave DePaul a 6-1 advantage over the New Mexico State softball team in the opening game of the weekend at the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday morning. The Aggies worked for six hits on the game with one run and one RBI and move to 10-6 on the season.

Sophomore Karysta Donisthorpe (3-1) started in the circle for the Aggies and went two complete innings while giving up five of the Blue Devil runs to suffer her first loss of the season. She pitched three strikeouts and just one walk in the game. Junior Celisha Walker came in for the remaining four innings to finish the game with four strikeouts and just one unearned run allowed.

“DePaul is a great team and they just got on our heels a bit early today,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “I thought we battled back and our defense made some great stops. With each batter, we continued to get better.”

NM State got the first hit of the day with a standing double from senior Amber Olive, but was left stranded in the top of the first. DePaul came back in its half of the opening inning with a grand slam to take a four-run lead over the Aggies. Olive finished the day going 2-for-3 at the plate.

The second inning went quiet, but the Blue Devils picked up a second home run for one run in the bottom of the third and another run off a throwing error by the Aggies.

It took until the fourth inning for the Aggies to get on the board with a solo shot over the left field wall by sophomore Staci Rodriguez in the top of the fourth.

The teams were scoreless in the final two innings of the game with junior Lacey Rother hitting a single up the left side for her second hit of the day. The sophomore transfer had her first hit in the fourth with a single up the middle just after sophomore Kelsey Dodd got a double to center field for her only hit of the game.

The Aggies face Cal State Northridge later Friday afternoon. NM State’s second game of the day is tentatively scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
