Aggies Sixth At Regionals

The Aggies need to pick up the scoring if they are to make the NCAA Golf Championship Tournanent.  They are in sixth place after the opening round of the Southwest Regionals in San Diego, the top 5 teams move onto the NCAA  finals.  The New Mexico State men shot an opening round score of 8-over par, 296 in San Diego, Calif., at the Carlton Oaks Golf Club. 

The Aggies “This is a very tough golf course with long fairways and small greens,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “If you don’t hit good iron shots you will be in big trouble. I’m was pleased with our play today but tomorrow we need to get a complete team effort in order to stay in the hunt.”

Leading the way for the Aggies was junior Tim Madigan who carded a first round score of 3-under par, 69. Madigan is currently second overall. Senior Ryan Word is tied for 12th overall after shooting a 1-over par, 73 in the opening round of play.

Freshman Justin Knauber carded a 4-over par, 76 in round one and sits in a tie for 40th overall, while freshman Justin Shin went 6-over par, 78 in the opening round. Shin is tied for 60th overall. Sophomore Gaston De La Torre rounded out the Aggie competitors with an 11-over par, 83, putting him in a tie for 72nd after the first round of play.

Oregon, California, Tennessee and UNLV are all tied for first-place with an opening round team score of 6-over par, 294. Central Florida is at 5-over par followed by the Aggies at 6-over par. Eddie Olsen of UNLV leads the individual tournament after carding a 4-under par, 68.

The Aggies will be back on the course for the second round of play Friday, May 21st with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
