Monday, May 7, 2012 - 1:41pm

The New Mexico State University track and field team will begin competition in the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Moscow, Idaho, starting Tuesday, May 8, and ending on Friday, May 11.

"If we can go in and do what we are capable of doing, we will be sitting good as a team," said head track and field coach Orin Richburg.

The season has been highlighted with conference awards and school records.

Junior LaSasha Aldredge put together a fantastic season, receiving the honor of WAC Athlete of the Week on three different occasions this season. Aldredge first received the award for the week of March 12-18 when she ran a 200m time of 24.32, which at the time ranked her seventh all-time in NM State history. Aldredge was also named WAC Athlete of the Week the following week of March 19-25 when she broke the all-time school record for the 400m with a time of 54.17, which at the time was the best time in the conference and ranked 14th in the nation. Aldredge won the award for a third time for the week of April 16-22 when she posted a time of 54.03 in the 400m to improve upon her previously broken school record and the top time in the conference.

There were 18 records set or improved upon during the 2012 season. Sophomore Alishia Perkins improved to fourth all-time for NM State in the 100m with a time of 11.79 and freshman Jenna Banegas landed 10th all-time with a time of 12.04. Aldredge improved to fifth all-time for NM State in the 200m by posting a time of 24.12, as well as her previously mentioned all-time school record of 54.03 in the 400m. Sophomore Jenna Padilla and freshman Caroline Lewiecki landed fifth and sixth respectively in the NM State record books for the 3,000m steeplechase when Padilla posted a time of 11:20.80 and Lewiecki posted a time of 11:24.94. Sophomore Gael Sanchez also broke into the all-time records list for the 3,000m steeplechase, posting a time of 11:31.84, placing her eighth all-time.

Freshman Mareka Clark posted a distance of 12.33m in the triple jump to earn her third all-time for NM State, and sophomore Horlexus Willis landed seventh all-time in the triple jump when she posted a mark of 11.71m. Freshman Taylor Black marked a height of 3.32m in the pole vault, which placed her third all-time for NM State. Three different Aggie freshman made the all-time list in the javelin throw as well. Alexandra Nichols placed eighth with a mark of 39.90m, Tiffany Gerber placed ninth with a mark of 39.83m and Nicolette Serrao placed 10th all-time with a mark of 38.55m.

The Aggies also set records in three relay events. Perkins, Aldredge, Banegas and freshman Kendra Walker helped post a time of 46.14 in the 4x100m, which was good for sixth all-time. The Aggies set two different records in the 4x400m. Aldredge, Perkins, senior Melanie Clay and sophomore Zoe Meade together ran a time of 3:45.33 for fourth all-time, and Meade, Clay, Aldredge and senior Jndia Cleveland together posted a time of 3:45.76 for fifth all-time.
Last season NM State finished sixth in the WAC Outdoor Championships.

Competition will begin Tuesday, May 8, at 1 p.m. with heptathlon events.
