Aggies Ready For Gaels

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Dec.22)-The New Mexico State men’s basketball team concludes its five-game home stand when the Aggies host Saint Mary’s, Thursday, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. The game is available on KGRT 104 FM with the ‘Voice of the Aggies’ Jack Nixon calling the action and the pregame show starts at 6:30. The contest is available in Spanish on Vista 98.7 FM with Martin Cortez.
New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggies are 6-7 following an 82-76 win over Louisiana, Dec. 21. Junior forward Troy Gillenwater leads NM State with a team-high 18.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Junior guard Hernst Laroche is averaging 11.2 points and 4.5 assists per contest. Freshman guard Christian Kabongo adds 11.2 points per game, while junior center Hamidu Rahman supplies 9.6 points per game. With the recent injuries, senior guard Gordo Castillo has averaged a team-high 15.3 points per game, while Kabongo and Laroche have provided 13.0 and 11.5 points per contest, respectively, in the last four games.
Scouting Saint Mary’s
The Gaels are currently 9-2 this season but they have only played one road game prior their trip to Las Cruces. Saint Mary’s defeated Long Beach State, 82-74, Dec. 18 in Anaheim, Calif. The Gaels have four players who post double-digit average with redshirt junior forward Rob Jones leading the way with 14.2 points per game. Senior guard Mickey McConnell supplies 12.8 points per game, while sophomore guard Matthew Dellavedova and redshirt sophomore forward Tim Williams contribute 12.3 and 10.0 points per contest, respectively.
Saint Mary’s has a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series after the Gaels defeated NM State, 100-68, Nov. 13, 2009.
Center Hamidu Rahman scored a career-high 22 points for NM State but the Aggies fell at Saint Mary’s, 100-68, Nov. 13, 2009, at the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif. Rahman led all scorers in the season opener and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Guard Jahmar Young recorded 16 points while guard Jonathan Gibson added 14.
Aggies Escape Louisiana, 82-76, Fourth Straight Win
Senior guard Gordo Castillo tied a career high with 20 points to guide NM State past Louisiana, 82-76, Dec. 22, at the Pan American Center. Freshman guard Christian Kabongo added 17 points and junior guard Hernst Laroche scored 19 for the Aggies. NM State forced a season-high 23 turnovers en route to its fourth straight victory.
The Aggies begin WAC play in 2010-11 with a road trip to Idaho, Dec. 29, and Boise State, Dec. 31.
