The New Mexico State baseball team opened the 2011 season with a 9-6 win over Houston Baptist Friday, Feb. 18, at Presley Askew Field.

The Aggies posted nine runs on 13 hits and tallied two doubles and a triple. Houston Baptist crossed the plate six times on ten hits and committed two errors, compared to NM State's three.

"We really didn't play well but we won so that is a good start," head coach Rocky Ward said. "You have to forgive some of the guys for opening-day nerves, but we were able to keep the guys in there and get the win."

Senior right-hand pitcher Dan Reid picked up his first win of the year and now has seven wins for his Aggie career. He went six complete innings and came up with five strikeouts, while giving up four runs and only two of them earned.

"Dan pitched around some defensive mistakes, and got out of some binds," Ward said. "If we would have played a little better defense he might have gone seven or eight innings. Overall it was a good outing for him."

The losing pitcher was HBU's Dalton Schafer, who went 5 1/3 innings. He gave up 10 hits and seven runs.
Senior shortstop Ryan Aguayo and senior outfielder Wes Starkes had pretty good days at the plate, tallying a total of seven hits between the two. Aguayo went 4-of-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Starkes was 3-of-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Sophomore second baseman Parker Hipp also had a pretty good offensive day going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.

The Huskies scored first going up 1-0 after a half inning of play but that lead wouldn't last long as NM State scored in the bottom of the inning and crossed the plate in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by Starkes.

Both teams scored a run in the third and fourth innings taking the score 5-3. After a homer in the sixth by an HBU slugger to pull within one run, the Aggies scored twice making the score 7-4. Senior catcher Chuck Howard was the first to score in the inning after he got on by being hit by a pitch.

HBU took the score to 7-5 in the eighth inning, but two insurance runs by the Aggies in the bottom half of the inning gave NM State the nine runs it needed to secure the victory. Hipp and junior outfielder Bryan Karraker picked up RBI singles to help the Aggies to the victory.

The Aggies take on HBU in game two of the series, Saturday, Feb. 19 at Presley Askew Field with game time set for 2:05p.m. (MT). Although live stats may not be available for the game, you can follow along and get score updates online at Twitter.
