The New Mexico State swimming and diving team is in fifth place in the team standings after the first day of competition at the Houston Invitational with 142 points.

"It was a good start," head coach Rick Pratt said. "This is the fastest we've certainly ever swam in November, and we're expecting to get better as the meet continues. We're not as sharp as we could be, but for the middle of the season this is fun."

The invitational is a 10-team field with a morning preliminary session and an evening finals session and the top 16 finishes score.

NM State had three swimmers collect points in the 200 individual medley. Freshman Jessica Legge led the way in third, junior Beth Cate followed in fourth and sophomore Tricia Kiss was 15th. In the 50 free, freshman Aliena Schmidtke tallied a fifth-place showing.

The Aggie upperclassmen directed the distance effort with senior Rachelle Bassen in 11th, senior Brittney Moore in 12th and junior Haley Gansneder in 16th. NM State finished fourth in the 400-medley relay with the team of sophomore Terrin Seaver, Legge, Cate and Schmidtke. The Aggies also claimed eighth place with the team of Kiss, senior Maria Spies, Bassen and junior Alex Fenton. NM State began the meet with an eighth-place finish in the 200-free relay with Schmidtke, senior Gina Palombit, Seaver and Fenton.
The meet continues Friday, Nov. 18 and concludes Saturday, Nov. 19.
