The New Mexico State softball team earned two victories at the UTEP Invitational, defeating Incarnate Word 16-2 in five innings and Houston Baptist 8-3 on Friday, Feb. 21. The Aggies improved to 7-5 on the season and sit on a five-game winning streak.

The Aggies had three homeruns on the day and finished with 23 hits. The pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts and sophomore Makayla McAdams picked up her fourth win of the season, pitching four full innings against Houston Baptist.

"We did what we needed to do in the circle," associate head coach Cat Heifner said. "Defensively, we played strong and we did well offensively. We got contributions from all parts of the lineup. We did a good job and did what we needed to do."

The Aggies opened up the scoring early as they scored 10 runs on six hits in the top of the first inning against Incarnate Word.

The scoring started when freshman Haley Nakamura drove in freshman Devon Thomey with the second hit of the game.

The Aggies kept up their consistent hitting throughout the first inning and were also helped by two errors, helping to the 10 first-inning runs.

NM State continued their productivity during the game as they scored at least one run in every inning.
Power was provided by freshman Susie Chandler with a solo homerun, which brought the score to 13-1 in the fourth inning.

Redshirt sophomore Karysta Donisthorpe pitched the complete game and earned the win, bringing her record to 2-2 on the year. She gave up three hits in the game while striking out four batters.

In the second game, the Aggies once again got off to a fast start and took a 3-0 lead over Houston Baptist after the first inning.

McAdams gave up three runs in four innings of work and striking out two batters.

The Huskies closed the gap in the fourth off a homerun that brought the score to 6-3, but back-to-back homeruns by junior Malena Padilla and senior Alyssa Ruiz extended the Aggie lead once again.

Adams was replaced by senior Celisha Walker, who pitched three innings and allowed no runs or hits and struck out one batter.

NM State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they take Houston Baptist at 10 a.m., and Incarnate Word following that game.
