The New Mexico State baseball team lost its ninth consecutive Western Athletic Conference Tournament game after falling 9-4 to No. 3 seed Texas State, Thursday, May 23 at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The No. 6 seeded Aggies tallied two runs in the second and two more in the eighth but it was not enough as Texas State scored four runs in the first three innings of play and another four runs in the bottom of the fifth. NM State finished the afternoon with nine hits and two errors as junior Michael Medina, a second-team all-WAC selection, posted a 3-of-5 day.

Senior starting pitcher Adam Mott was credited with the loss and is now 6-6 on the year after he worked 4.1 innings with five strikeouts, two walks and two hit-batters. Texas State pitcher L. Humpal worked a career-high 6.2 innings and moved to 5-2 on the season with the win.

“It was another tough outing for Adam. We were still in the game after falling behind 5-2 in the third but when we gave up four runs in the fifth, we knew it would be a tough battle,” head coach Rocky Ward said. “We’re left with two more baseball games to play and we just have to take care business. We have to get out and be Arlington tomorrow.”

NM State was down 1-0 heading to the second as senior Parker Hipp came to the plate and picked up a walk. Hipp, who finished the day going 1-of-2 with two walks and two runs scored, stole second to put some pressure on the Texas State pitcher. Senior Bobby Lecount got in the batter’s box and blasted his 15th home run of the year to give the Aggie a 2-1 lead after an inning and a half of play.

Mott hit the lead-off batter to start the second and that runner advanced to second on a balk. That base runner scored on a single to tie the game at 2-2. NM State was held scoreless in the top of the third before a Texas State home run, a double and an Aggie error gave the Bobcats a 5-2 lead after three innings.

A scoreless fourth was preceded by the big four-run inning Texas State posted in the fifth. Senior Casey Collins entered the game during the fourth and gave up one run but he bounced back and tallied three strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth.

NM State made a push posting two runs in the top of the eighth on a two-RBI double by freshman Kent Blackstone.

The Aggies play their second game of the 2013 WAC Tournament, Friday, May 24 at 2:00 p.m. (MT). Listen to the action live online at www.NMStateSports.com or follow along with score updates on Twitter @NMStateAggies.
