Aggies Fall at Home to #3 Boise, 59-0

Sports

POSTED: Saturday, October 2, 2010 - 9:39pm

UPDATED: Saturday, October 2, 2010 - 10:37pm

The New Mexico State football team fell to No. 3 Boise State in the opening WAC game of the season, 59-0. When the Aggies faced the highest-ranked team to play in Aggie Memorial Stadium, NM State fell to 0-4 and 0-1 in the conference, while the Broncos improved to 4-0 and 1-0.

For the Aggies, junior wide receiver Taveon Rogers tied the school record for kick returns for the second consecutive game. He had six kick returns for 136 yards. Junior cornerback Jonte Green paced the Aggie defense with a career-high 11 tackles.

On its opening drive, Boise State scored on a 15-yard keeper from senior backup quarterback Mike Coughlin to take a 7-0 lead, which capped a seven-play, 67-yard drive.

On the Aggies’ next possession, senior quarterback Matt Christian completed an 18-yard pass to senior tight end Kyle Nelson. Then Boise State senior defensive end Ryan Winterswyk picked off Christian at the 25-yard line on the ensuing play. The mistake led to a Bronco touchdown when junior running back Doug Martin plunged for a one-yard score.

After the Aggie defense held Boise State to a 35-yard field goal from senior kicker Kyle Brotzman, NM State’s offense faltered and the Broncos took advantage. Boise State recovered an Aggie fumble that resulted in a senior running back Jeremy Avery 18-yard rushing touchdown for a 24-0 lead.

The Aggies started the next series strong when senior running back Seth Smith dashed for 21 yards on the first play. Christian followed with a nine-yard scamper to midfield but three plays later an Aggie fumble ended the drive.

The Broncos scored another pair of touchdowns before halftime to post a 38-0 lead. In the third quarter, Boise State added two passing touchdowns before a final scored in the closing minutes of the game.

The Aggies host in-state rival New Mexico, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. in the NM State Aggies are Tough Enough to Wear Pink game.
