Aggies Drop Second Consecutive Game to No. 10 NC State; Start Wake Forest Series Tomorrow
The New Mexico State baseball team fell for the second consecutive day to No. 10 North Carolina State dropping the afternoon game 8-3 in Doak Field, Thursday, Feb. 28. The Aggies are now 3-6 this year while the Wolfpack move to 7-1.
Senior starter Adam Mott was credited with the loss after going 5.2 innings, striking out four batters and giving up five runs. The Aggie offense scored their three runs in the top of the fourth and finished the day with six hits and an error. NC State crossed the plate eight times on 11 hits with one error as well.
"It was a well-played game and we are playing a top-ranked opponent on the road," head coach Rocky Ward said. "We need to fine-tune our offense and we can't leave runners aboard the way we did in the sixth. We need to take advantage of opportunities when they are there."
The game was tied 3-3 after four innings of play but the Wolfpack scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a solo-homer to leftfield and an RBI double to left. NM State had a chance to score a couple of runs in the top of the sixth but squandered the opportunity leaving two runners aboard.
Right-hand reliever Tim Torsney entered the game in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded and two outs and was able to get his team out of the game. NM State sent nine batters to the plate from the seventh through the ninth innings but couldn't get any runners to cross the plate, while NC State scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to go up 8-3, which would be the final.
The Aggies now head to Winston-Salem, N.C. for a three-game series with Wake Forest. The first game of the series is set for a 2:00 p.m. (MT) start on Friday, March 1.
