The New Mexico State baseball team used seven pitchers to defeat the Texas Tech 7-6 as junior Gory Goldstrom hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to bring in senior Kyle Phillips, Monday, March 25.
After junior right-hander Christopher Bradley sat down three of the four batters he faced in the top of the ninth, and Phillips led-off the bottom of the inning by being hit by a pitch. Phillips advanced over to second base when junior Taylor Noyer tallied a sac-bunt before scoring the winning run.
Bradley earned the win and is now 2-3 on the year and now has 24 strikeouts in 25.2 innings of play, while Goldstrom was stellar at the dish going 4-of-4 with a walk and three RBI’s. Phillips was also clutch for his team on Monday night marking a 3-of-4 night with four of the Aggie runs.
NM State was down 6-4 heading into the eighth inning when senior Parker Hipp tied the game on a RBI single up the middle that brought in pinch runner Brandon Cooper. It was junior Tanner Rust who got the Aggies to within one run as he also singled just before Hipp.
The Aggies took a 2-1 lead after two innings but Texas Tech tied it up in the top of the third and took a 4-3 lead after four complete innings. NM State had a chance to take a lead in the bottom of the fourth but left four runners aboard as the TTU left fielder robbed Hipp of a base hit.
Sophomore Trey Higginbotham started the game and went 3.2 inning striking out four batters, while giving up four runs, three of them earned. The pitching staff totaled 12 K’s on the night while the Red Raiders marked only six against NM State.
The Aggies head back into Western Athletic Conference play taking on CSU Bakersfield in a three-game road series starting
