The New Mexico State women's golf team concluded the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, held at the par 72, 6,636-yards Alvamar Golf Course, on Tuesday by rallying to shoot a 301, the lowest score of the day, and finish the tournament in a tie for sixth place.
The Aggies, who entered the final round in 11th place out of 13 teams, finished with a total score of 87-over-par 951 (324-326-301), tied with Middle Tennessee State and Illinois State. Eventual tournament champion and host Kansas was the only team to have a better round in the tournament than NM State's final round. The Jayhawks posted a 298 during the second round of the tournament.
Kansas, which had a 16-stroke lead heading into the final round, finished with a 42-over-par 906 (303-298-305). The Jayhawks cruised to a 21-stroke victory over second place Arkansas State which finished with a 63-over-par 927 (315-302-310).
Although Kansas won the team title, it was Arkansas State's Abigail Laker that took home the individual title. NM State had its most productive day of the young season on Tuesday, as all five Aggie golfers either tied or shot their best round of the tournament. After shooting in the 80s throughout the first two rounds, four out of the five Aggie golfers had a round in the 70s on Tuesday.
The NM State rally was led by senior Aileen Meredith who shot the Aggies' best round of the tournament, a 2-over-par 74, during the final round to finish with a three-round total of 18-over-par 234 (80-80-74). Meredith finished in a tie for 11th, the best finish for an Aggie golfer this season, and only a couple of shots out of the top 10.
Freshman Kacey Dalpes and sophomore Laura Barron each shot a final round score of 4-over-par 76. Dalpes finished with a three-round total of 22-over-par 238 (80-82-76) and moved up 10 spots from her second round standing to finish in a tie for 27th. Barron, who was the only Aggie golfer to improve on her score after each round, finished at 24-over-par 240 (84-80-76) and in a tie for 33rd.
Junior Amelie Buhl shot a 3-over-par 75 during her final round, one stroke behind Meredith for the best round of the tournament for NM State. She finished with a three-round total of 28-over-par 244 (83-86-75) to finish in a tie for 45th. Senior Marisa Bautista tied her tournament-best score of 9-over-par 81 in the final round and finished the tournament at 30-over-par 246 (81-84-81), tied for 52nd.
