Nathan Jeffery rushed for 177 yards against the #4 Oklahoma Sooners as UTEP nearly pulled off the upset in a 24-7 loss Saturday.
The sophomore also returned a blocked punt 24 yards for 7-0 lead and the only Miner touchdown as the 30-point underdogs weren't intimidated by the mighty Sooners, the highest-ranked team they had faced at home.
Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns, the first coming on a 68-yard catch and run to Kenny Stills that tied the game at 7-7. The junior recorded 6 grabs for 121 yards.
The game stayed tied into halftime, however UTEP had their chances to take a lead in the first half. Senior kicker Dakota Warren missed both of his attempts. The first from 45 yards, the second from 31 yards.
What the Miners lacked in offense overshadowed by the brilliant game plan by UTEP defensive coordinator Andre Patterson. The UTEP D sacked Jones three times for a loss of 19-yards and held the National Championship contender to just 10 points after three quarters.
The tank would run dry for the UTEP defense in the 4th giving the Sooners two late scores but it was a statement game for the Miners who now prepare to head for SEC country to face Ole Miss on the road Saturday.
