#20 UTEP Rifle Sets Season High In Setback To #2 TCU
The #20 UTEP rifle team rose to the occasion of sharing the range with one of the top teams in the country by firing a season-high 4511 in a matchup with No. 2 TCU at home over the weekend. The Horned Frogs finished at 4694 to secure their 22nd straight victory.
The Miners were consistent throughout the competition, finishing with their second-best scores on the year in the both the smallbore (2220) and the air rifle (2288). The effort allowed them to top their prior campaign aggregate high of 4503, which was achieved in a meet at Ohio State on Nov. 2, 2012.
UTEP, which had just the minimum four shooters in action, was able to overcame that through quality shooting by each member of the squad.
Jennifer Armendariz started strong with a campaign-best 576 in the smallbore. She then followed that up with her second-highest sum of the year in the air rifle (589) on the way to concluding the competition with an aggregate of 1165. That sum is just two points shy of her season high (1167), which was recorded vs. TCU on Oct. 20, 2012.
Korina Rodriguez recorded a season-best aggregate of 1151 to buoy Armendariz. She rolled to that score on the strength of her second-best scores of the campaign in both the smallbore (569) and (582). The 1151 aggregate ties as her third-best figure as a Miner.
Lone senior Hannah Muegge fired a solid 575 in the air rifle. It marked the sixth time in seven events this season that she has topped 570. She finished with an aggregate of 1137, aided by the score of 562 in the smallbore.
Walk-on Areli Oros enjoyed a fine day across the board. She fired her second-best score (516) in the smallbore this year. Oros checked in at 542 in the air rifle, also her second-highest sum on campaign. The combined efforts allowed her to conclude the competition with an aggregate of 1058, which was just three points short of her career personal best (1061).
The Miners will be back in action with a match at Air Force Saturday.
