El Paso, TX (KTSM) — For most high school student athletes, achieving one state championship title is a rare and fortunate accomplishment. Santa Teresa's Britani Gonzales is not most high school athletes. The junior is already a back-to-back New Mexico 800m State Champion.
Gonzales set the state record in the Class 4A 800 meters as a sophomore last year, running a 2:14.66. She finished second as a freshman in 2:19.5 and broke the tape in this year's 800 in 2:14.99.
Now she turns her focus on the Great Southwest Track and Field Classic in Albuquerque. The event, in it's 39th year, invites the top athletes from 20 states to compete individually on the University of New Mexico campus.
"That's going to be exciting I think, just to see how other people are. Talk to them just to see what their strategies are for running and everything they do and their goals are to accomplish what they want to do. All the differences from different states instead of New Mexico," said Gonzales.
The meet begins June 5 and runs through June 7.
