LAS CRUCES- Police have arrested two men for the July 30 attack that severely injured a NMSU basketball player and a nearby woman.
Nicholas Vallejos, 23, was arrested Thursday by U.S. Marshals and Gary Ray Macias, 25, was arrested by Las Cruces Police on Wednesday. Vallejos is charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon while Macias is charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Both men are charged with conspiracy.
Police say the victim, 21-year-old Makhtar Diop, was dancing inside the club when he noticed Macias causing trouble with a woman. The male victim told Macias to leave the woman alone.
Detectives learned that Macias signaled for his friend, Vallejos, to join him. Without saying a word, Vallejos hit Diop's face with a beer bottle and the men began beating him. As Diop defended himself, Macias struck him with another beer bottle and Vallejos slashed his abdomen multiple times with broken glass.
During the attack, flying shards of glass from a broken bottle struck the left eye of an innocent bystander, the 31-year-old woman. The injuries to her eye were severe.
Bond for Vallejos was set at $30,000 cash while Macias is being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond.
