Spend that holiday gift
If you received a gift card over the holiday season, you might want to start thinking about using it.
The first thing you want to do is look at the expiration date. Federal rules require money on a gift card to be good for at least five years from the date the card was purchased. And if you hang on to your gift card for more than a year, the value may start slipping away.
Pamela Banks with the Consumers Union said, "If you don't use your card for 12 months you could be accessed monthly fee that eats away the value of the card."
She adds to remember to treat your gift card like cash and keep it safe. And if you don't like the cards you received, consider exchanging them or even selling them online. You can do that at several websites like www.cardpool.com or www.giftcardrescue.com.
