LAS CRUCES- The Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley is desperately seeking an adoptive home for a special breed of dog in a grave situation.

Doña Ana County Animal Control Officers rescued what appears to be a purebred male Great Pyrenees, a breed of dog known for its keen intelligence and loyalty.

He is estimated to be about five years old and weighs 88 pounds, slightly under the normal weight for a Great Pyrenees his age. He also tested positive for heartworm, which qualifies him as a free adoption.

“We hope someone who truly wants to save this dog will get him the treatment he needs,” said Shelter Director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock. “Because of that commitment, the adoption fee is waived in these circumstances.”

Due to overcrowding, animals aren’t typically kept at the shelter for such an extended period of time, but Vesco-Mock says this dog deserves a chance to be saved.

“The temperament in this dog is exceptional,” she said. “He would make a great companion, or a great family dog.”

Despite pleas to area rescue organizations, the dog remains at the shelter. Anyone interested in adopting him can stop by the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley, 3551 Bataan Memorial West, or call (575) 382-0018 for more information.
