EL PASO- A pair of well-known belly dancers in the Borderland are bringing their annual show to the Scottish Rite Theater.
For the past seven years the Shimmy Sisters have been entertaining audiences with their moves and they say this year they have a show that's like nothing else in El Paso. We spoke with the show's promoter, Hal Marcus.
The Shimmy Sisters, Leilainia and Adelaide are back for their seventh year with a brand new show.
"It’s not only belly dancing. It incorporates circus feats, like a hula hoop and like tight rope walking and sworn balancing and using the scarves, using wings," says Marcus.
Marcus, who’s also their dad, says this is going to be one unique production. About 30 dancers are taking part in the performance.
Kareesha Willow, who's been part of the show since it began, says this time around the show will add another element. "It won't be a regular belly dance show that you've seen here in El Paso. It's gonna have a story throughout and the sisters throughout and be more theatrical," says Willow.
Marcus says the show is a spiritual journey. "It's about one of the Shimmy sisters that is going through this internal search for life and its meaning. What they've done is written a new album called Nine Levels to Bliss," says Marcus.
Marcus says the Shimmy Sisters shows have been so popular they decided to move it to a bigger venue this year -- the Scottish Rite Temple Theater Downtown. "They were doing two or three sold out shows. They said let's just do one show in a larger venue and, of course, the Scottish Rite Temple Theater is very mystical. It's very beautiful," said Marcus.
The Shimmy Sisters' "Nine Levels to Bliss" will be held tonight at the Scottish Rite Theater. That’s located at 301 W. Missouri Avenue in Downtown El Paso. The performance is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. You can purchase tickets in advance at the Hal Marcus Gallery located at 1308 N. Oregon St.
