Yes it was earlier in history however, the distinction as mentioned in the article is that it was for Spain. The Spanish came for two reasons riches and to convert the locals. The pilgrims on the other hand came for religious freedoms. In order to get to the Americas they were financed by investors in England. So, they too in part came for riches as well. It should also be noted that the colonies at Plymouth and Jamestown became forerunners for the English colonies which, later became the USA
