It IS possible that the drum fish deaths were caused by a pollutant...
Maybe drum fish are the only type of fish that reacted to the pollutant. Much like people can have life threatening allergic reactions to very specific things. The scent of peanut butter does not send all animals into anaphylactic shock, but it does have this effect on some humans.
Or possibly the other fish are immune to the pollutant much like humans can become resistant to antibiotics.
