The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced Monday that the New Mexico State men’s golf team will be the No. 12 seed in the NCAA Regional tournament at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course in San Diego, Calif., May 20-22.
“San Diego is a place that we go and play almost every year so we are familiar with that area,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “Looking at the draws I don’t see one that is easy but I think this is one of the more favorable regional tournaments we could have gone too. It’s a good golf course. I played there a few times in college. I think this is a great place for us to be selected too.”
This is the third straight trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the Aggies. NM State won its fourth WAC Championship last week, earning a spot at the regional tournament.
The Aggies will send Tim Madigan, Ryan Word, Gaston De La Torre, Justin Shin and Justin Knauber to the regional tournament. Madigan, Word and De La Torre all competed in the 2009 regional tournament.
Joining the Aggies, who just won their third straight Western Athletic Conference title, will be the following teams ranked in order:
Oregon, UNLV, Augusta State, Tennessee, San Diego State, California, Chattanooga, Central Florida, Arizona, UC-Irvine, Missouri, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts. Teams winning automatic qualification are designated by their conferences in parentheses.
Last year at the 2009 NCAA Southwest Regional Tournament, Aggies carded a final round team score of 24-over par, 308, placing 11th overall. For the tournament the Aggies shot 57-over par, 909. Senior Travis Reid finished the tournament tied for seventh overall with a three round score of 4-over par, 217. After two round of even par golf, Reid shot 4-over par in the final round of play.
