las Cruces, NM (KTSM) — Las Cruces MMA fighter Joseph Torrez will not face charges in connection to a deadly New Year's Day home invasion in Doña Ana County.
Officials with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office said in a statement to News Channel Nine, "After a thorough investigation, that included numerous interviews and police field investigations, finger print, DNA and blood type analysis, and a complete autopsy report, the evidence does not exist to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Joseph Torrez killed Sal Garces without legal justification."
Investigators said the details in the case cannot be discussed because five other people are still facing charges of aggravated burglary, conspiracy, and aggravated Battery.
District Attorney Mark D’Antonio said, “The decision not to charge Mr. Torrez is based on the facts and the forensic evidence presented by DASO. In particular, it was the scientific evidence that led to that conclusion.”
El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — Deputies made two more arrests Tuesday in connection to a deadly New Year's Day home invasion in Doña Ana County.
Cylver Pearl Betancourt, 18, and Rachel Carrillo, 19, are in the Doña Ana County Detention Center on charges of aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary.
Deputies believe they were part of a group of four alleged gang members that forced their way into the home of professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter Joe Torrez at 600 block of King James on New Year's Day.
Torrez fought back, killing 25-year-old Sal Garces, and injuring Nathan Avalos, 19. Garces was found two houses down from Torrez's home.
Torrez's fiance, two-year-old son, and 17-year-old sister were inside the home at the time of the alleged invasion.
Avalos was arrested in connection to the alleged burglary on Monday.
The women were arrested at a home in the 1200 block of Wingate just after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Both are being held on a $10,000 secured bond.
