El Paso, TX — UTEP women’s tennis head coach Myriam Sopel announced on Thursday the addition of Florida Statetransfer Duda Santos to play for the Miners beginning with the 2014-15 season.
The native of Curitiba-Parana, Brazil, will have three years of eligibility.
“I’m looking forward to coaching Duda”, Sopel said. “She is very athletic and a hard worker. Duda likes the challenge on the tennis court, in the weight room, on the running field and in the classroom.”
Santos played at the five and six positions during her freshman season with the Seminoles, forging a 5-9 singles mark. Santos finished the spring with a 2-3 record (0-2 at No. 5, 2-1 at No. 6). She completed the fall season with a 3-6 record.
In doubles play, Santos fashioned an 8-9 overall record, including a 7-5 mark in dual-match play. Santos was 5-5 at the No. 2 position and 2-0 at the No. 3 spot.
Prior to playing at Florida State, Santos posted a career record of 30-22 in singles and 24-20 in doubles action in juniors.
Behind three victories, Santos was crowned the doubles champion in the XVI Londrina Open ARTHROM in Brazil in October 2012. Santos made a run at the Inka Bowl in Areguipa, Peru, in singles action, winning four matches before falling in the semifinal round. At the Copa Santo Catarina in Brazil, Santos claimed the singles title in the fall of 2011 behind five wins.
Santos is the third student-athlete to sign under Sopel, and fourth overall to join UTEP in the last year. Incoming freshmen Jeannez Daniel (signed May 7), Valeriia Yanovska (signed May 28) and Lois Wegenvoort (signed Nov. 15) will commence their collegiate careers at the beginning of the 2014 fall season.
