Las Cruces, NM — A former cashier for the City of Las Cruces Utilities Department was arrested Thursday on suspicion of skimming several hundred dollars from her cash drawer.
Heather Wagner, 35, is charged with one fourth-degree felony count of embezzlement.
On March 14 Las Cruces Police learned that Wagner’s cash drawer at the city’s utility payment center was short by $700.01. An internal audit was conducted but the money was never located.
A Las Cruces Police detective spoke with Wagner by telephone on March 21 and asked that she voluntarily submit to an interview. Wagner agreed to do so but detectives had been unable to reach her since March 21.
A warrant was obtained for Wagner’s arrest and it was issued Thursday, May 15. She was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000.
