MESILLA, N.M. — Mesilla parted ways with Marshal Tom Austin Friday in an effort to seek a more traditional employment of that position.
Mayor Nora Barraza said she made the decision to not continuing contracting Austin and informed the department Friday morning.
"The Town of Mesilla just intends to follow the traditional employment of a full-time salaried marshal," Barraza said Friday afternoon.
The marshal had been working with the town as a consultant and was not a direct town employee.
Days before the election, which Barraza won by three votes, Austin had sent a letter to the FBI alleging misappropriation of funds by the town.
"This has been in the works for weeks or even months ahead of elections or allegations and the whole thing," she said.
Barraza said the town will advertise for the position and select the best applicant in the coming weeks.
She added that she is grateful for the work Austin provided the town during his employment.
