Anthony, NM (KTSM) — The Doña Ana County Sheriffs department apprehended a fugitive wanted by agents on federal postal theft charges after investigators determined that he had stolen from as many as several hundred victims.
Sheriff's deputies executed a warrant on Tuesday morning in the 2000 block of Arrellano in Anthony, NM where they were able to locate 44-year-old Jose Manuel Guerra. According to federal agents with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Los Angeles Division Violent Crimes Team, Guerra had felony warrants that stemmed from allegations that he burglarized several post offices in California.
Law enforcement officers allegedly found stolen checks, debit cards and credit cards in his possession when they executed the warrant.
“The Postal Inspection Service has hunted those who steal mail for hundreds of years,” said Los Angeles Postal Inspector in charge B. Bernard Ferguson. “The ability to use the mail in a safe and secure manner is at the core of the Postal Inspection Service’s mission.”
Guerra was taken into custody on federal charges including burglary of a post office, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He is being held in Dona Ana County under protection of federal agents until he can be extradited to California.
