EL PASO (KTSM) — A local dentist gave back to our community and helped those who can't afford dental care, by providing free services once a year.
"I can't wait to go in there and get the first dental work I’ve had in years," said Kevin Rauvola.
Rauvola started the line and waited outside this dental clinic in downtown El Paso for five hours. He doesn't need much to know how important free healthcare is.
"In these hard economic times, especially for our most vulnerable members of the community, it's imperative that we utilize dental care and I’m homeless, so this is a water shed, godsend," he said.
It was a godsend for the Stiles Family too.
"We don't have dental insurance right now and I’m still trying to find a job, so we're trying to get some work done that we know needs to be done," said Adeliz Stiles.
She said she didn't grow up going to the dentist.
"I feel that had I gotten that care as a child, maybe I wouldn't have so many problems now as an adult," said Stiles.
She wanted to pass the habit on to her four kids.
"It’s important that they get cleanings and whatever work they need done before it advances into anything more severe," Stiles said.
That's the goal of Dr. Mehrnoosh Darj with Affordable Dental Associates. On Friday, she performed everything from fillings, simple extractions and cleanings all for free.
"For people that can't afford it, she feels like this way she can give back," said office manager Yvonne Prieto.
The office expected to treat 80 patients Friday.
If you missed this year's free dental care events, they'll offer them again next February.
