El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso Boxer Antonio Escalante was arrested on suspicion of DWI just before 9:00 p.m. in Northeast El Paso.
The arrest affidavit indicates that El Paso Police were dispatched to an assault call at 10701 Martin Luther King at 8:53 p.m. Monday evening. When officers arrived on the scene, they allegedly found Escalante asleep behind the wheel of a 2004 Mazda that was still running and in gear.
EPPD officers turned off the engine of the car and woke up Escalante and asked him to exit the vehicle. The affidavit says that the Officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on Escalante, in his vehicle and his breath. His eyes were allegedly bloodshot, he had slurred speech and an inability to stand. Officers also noted that there were open beverages inside the car, including a quarter full Budwieser Black Crown beer that was found in the driver's side cup holder.
Escalante refused a field sobriety test and also refused a breath sample. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on suspicion of driving while intoxicated with an open alcoholic container. He has bonds totaling $3,082.23.
A witness at the scene, brought NewsChannel9 exclusive cell phone footage of the arrest, which begins inside a Northeast El Paso convinence store. Escalante can be seen dancing and weaving while speaking with EPPD Officers.
Escalante is a two time Golden Gloves champion competing in the featherweight division. Escalante released a statement on Facebook Tuesday afternoon stating "I want to apologize to all my family, friends and sponsors for my a big mistake. My conduct is not acceptable but I will do everything in my power to change and regain the trust of everyone. Thanks!"
