El Paso, TX — Decorated American thoroughbred racehorse, Mine That Bird, will make an appearance Saturday, February 22 at this weekend's Mine That Bird Derby, scheduled for a 4:40pm post time at Sunland Park Racetrack. This is the 14th running of the $120,000 Mine That Bird Derby which includes a field of 10 going one mile and one sixteenth. Mine That Bird will lead the post-race parade and be present in the Winner’s Circle.
Best known for winning the Kentucky Derby in 2009, Mine That Bird became one of only nine geldings to win the Kentucky Derby and the second gelding to win the race since 1929. He finished second in the 2009 Preakness Stakes and third in the 2009 Belmont Stakes. It was at Sunland Park where Mine That Bird used the Borderland Derby as a stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby. During his three years of racing, he earned over $2.2million and won five of eighteen starts. Mine That Bird was voted New Mexico Horse of the Year for 2009.
