El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso Police have confirmed that former high school football standout Andre Bernard Jones was found dead in a El Paso hotel overnight.
Jones was once one of the star athletes from El Paso. He played with the Andress High School football team under coach Allan Sepkowitz . Jones signed to play Defensive Tackle for the Texas Longhorns when he was a 16-year-old Junior. Coming out of high school, Jones was one of the most highly-recruited defensive line prospects in the nation, and he competed in the U.S. Army All-American Game. However, Jones never played a down with the Longhorns.
On July 27, 2007, Jones and Texas teammate Robert Joseph allegedly committed an armed robbery at a southeast Austin apartment complex. Jones was dismissed from the Longhorns and returned to to El Paso area where he had several run-ins with the law including a 2012 arrest for manufacture and delivery of crack cocaine. Court records indicate that Jones served nine months in jail in connection with those charges and was released May of 2013.
Police say Jones' death is under investigation, but do not suspect foul play. Andre Bernard Jones was twenty-four years old at the time of his death.
