El Paso, TX (KTSM) — A day after the official start of National Letter of Intent Signing Day, a pair of El Paso athletes became the next to join Division I Athletics.
Stephanie Diaz, an All-District cross country and track star at Chapin, signed to run at DI University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio. She was recruited by her older sister Vivian who joined the Cardinals last season.
"We talked a lot on the phone and she tells me that it's a new experience because San Antonio is not the same as El Paso. That she enjoys it a lot. The people are fun and friendly. The coaches are good coaches," said Diaz.
She plans on perusing a career in the medical field after college.
Montwood High School midfielder Zinnia Hannig officially signed an NLI to play with UTPA women's soccer.
Hannig played three years of varsity soccer, earning spots on both the All-District First and Second Teams. She led one of her club teams, the El Paso Storm, to the 2013 State Championship.
“Zinnia is perhaps one of the most technical players out of El Paso,” Bugariu said. “She’s a player that I feel has gone under the radar. She’s has tremendous potential to play at this level and I think she’ll turn some heads doing so.”
