Trying to draw in more students, a small but growing number of colleges are now agreeing to help students pay back their student loans.
The Loan Repayment Assistance Programs cover student loan bills until the students secure a job that pays well. Once the undergraduates earn enough to afford to pay those bills, they take over the full payments.
Such programs encourage students to first pursue lower-paying jobs in their field, sometimes in the public sector. Law schools have offered such programs for decades to encourage young attorneys to consider public service jobs.
Now, dozens of private colleges are implementing similar plans for undergrads in all fields of study.
