LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The key witness sought Tuesday by the Dona Ana Sheriff's investigators in the deadly Dona Ana home invasion has made contact with authorities.
Investigators were trying to locate Victor Orquiz, 19, who is the brother of Joe Torrez the man who was the target of the alleged home invasion New Year's Day.
The Dona Ana County Sheriff's department said Orquiz's attorney called them late Tuesday afternoon after media outlets reported Orquiz was allegedly eluding authorities.
Investigators said Orquiz was seen at Torrez's home after the alleged home invasion that ended with the death of one the suspected attackers.
C.J. McElhinney, attorney for Joe Torrez, said Orquiz arrived just before the first responding deputies and they questioned him on the scene and released him.
McElhinney said Orquiz also willingly went down to the sheriff's department the following day.
The department said he provided them with a phone number but when they called him, nobody seemed to know who he was.
The sheriff's office said they will no longer be able to speak with Orquiz unless his attorney is present.
