EL PASO (KTSM) — A clinic in the lower valley is protecting El Pasoans from the flu epidemic.
On Saturday, Centro San Vicente gave free flu vaccines to 1,000 people, ages 18 to 64 years old.
The clinic was scheduled to open at 8 a.m. but because of the long line outside, doctors started an hour early.
There have been 19 flu-related deaths in Texas, including a middle-aged man from El Paso who died of H1N1.
Dr. Jose Luna wants to make sure we prevent more cases.
"You have to imagine, the flu is out there, there's a flu epidemic right now, people are dying," said Dr. Luna. "It's so important that everybody get their flu vaccine. People are afraid of the shot. People are afraid that they'll get the flu vaccine and get sick but that's not true. These flu vaccines are for prevention."
The clinic was awarded 1,000 flu shots after they applied for a grant from the non-profit organization, Direct Relief.
