After spending most of his life behind bars, one time convicted killer Daniel Villegas could be freed next week.
As News Channel 9 reported, the Texas Court of Criminal appeals ruled last month Villegas should get a new trial after being convicted of a double murder in northeast El Paso back in 1993. Villegas said his confession was coerced.
Since then, District Attorney Jaime Esparza asked Judge Sam Medrano be removed from the case, but that request was denied. Now Villegas is just waiting for a mandate to be issued by the court, which could come Monday. Medrano said if the mandate is issued he will have a bond hearing on Tuesday.
