(El Paso) — It was worth the wait.
UTEP took double overtime to defeat Denver 60-54 at the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.
Both teams struggled to score and UTEP might have won the game at the free throw line by making a whopping 26-36 from the stripe while Denver was 12-16. The Miners made more free throws than DU even attempted.
John Bohannon led UTEP with 15 rebounds and 17 points while Cedrick Lang came off the bench to play 30 minutes and score 10 points. C.J. Cooper was the only other Miner in double digits with 15 points. Cooper also hit a crucial 3-pointer in the second overtime after missing his first six attempts from beyond the arc. UTEP made just 2 of 19 three point attempts on the night.
Denver is known for running the "Princeton Offense" which is known for long possessions resulting in back door cuts and lay-ups. The Pioneers got looks at the basket but made just 16 of 66 attempts for a 27.% shooting average.
UTEP won the rebound battle 49-40 but turned the ball over a whopping 20 times.
