El Paso, TX (KTSM) — One of the Bordlerland's biggest football stars has passed away. Mike Williams played in the NFL for years -- after lighting up the scoreboard back in the 1970's for Parkland High School here in El Paso.
“Love my brother, that's all, he'll be missed,” Mark Kim Williams said through tears. Mark was Mike Williams’s brother.
Mike was a long-time El Pasoan and former University of New Mexico football player and in the early eighties he made it to the pros taking on the title of Kansas City Chief fullback. "He had broken so many records and you could just see that he would just kind of a standout here in El Paso and just throughout,” Morris Williams, another brother of Mike’s told us. His family is now grieving. Mike passed away just days ago to congestive heart failure. He was just 52 years old. "It happened right, the day before Christmas, so that kind of… you know, I missed him with me up there cooking…. So that was kind of hard."
His loved ones said, he was an all-around good guy. "Mike was just a friend to everybody. You couldn't go somewhere where he didn't know somebody,” Robert Frownfelter, Mike’s best friend explained.
And that he was always willing to help out with the family business, even when he was hurting. "He started getting a little sick and his knees were bothering him but then he would come in and just pitch hit on what I guess I call them critical days,” Morris told us.
Even though Mike had health problems until the day he died, his family said, his personality still shined through. Dressing up as ‘Madea’ for years. “That just Mike though. See, he was a joker like that. He used to joke around and he was a good guy, real good guy,” Mark said.
As the family grieves, they want El Pasoans to know just who they'll be missing. "They lost a good athlete… one of the best in El Paso. Ever,” Mark said.
The family is planning a public memorial service. It will take place Monday at Mo's barbeque on 5019 Alabama.
