Cd. Juarez, Chih. (KTSM) — The United States Consulate in Juarez issued a security warning to U.S. citizens who plan to travel across the border.
The warning was issued due to what Consulate officials a "heightened potential for transnational criminal organization-related violence in and around Ciudad Juarez."
The warning refers to an incident on the evening of December 19 when Juarez police exchanged gunfire with drug cartel members in Downtown Juarez. A person was also executed at a bar in downtown central Juarez.
Approximately 40 people have been killed in Juarez during the month of December.
The U.S. Consulate General is advising U.S. citizens to avoid public areas including shopping malls, restaurants and government buildings, and to also always be aware of their surroundings.
Officials expect the violence to continue.
