El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso is home to more than 700,000 people. Many are hardworking folks and some with personalities larger than life. One of those residents is Estine Davis.
You could drive by Estine's East Side Barbershop on North Piedras a dozen times and never even notice it's there, but step one foot inside and you'll immediately realize it's a local treasure, a portal to the past.
Estine Davis isn't just the interior decorator, she's actually the barber.
"I don't want to change it. It wouldn't look like a barbershop," she said.
No one's sure exactly sure how old Estine is. That's not something she's willing to talk about, nut suffice to say she's as old as many of her antiques, although she swears she's nowhere near retirement.
"I don't want to retire because I know if you retire you're gone. You look at the TV and the TV looks at you. You don't use that mind, you're going to lose it." she said.
And Estine has led quite the life. Not only is she a barber, she was once model and modeling coach.
"I went international," she said.
She even won the Miss Black El Paso Pageant, but eventually she cut ties with modeling and became a beautician. That didn't work out.
"The ladies were always in and out underneath the dryers and always talking across each other and I couldn't stand it," she said. "These women were about to give me a nervous breakdown."
So she crossed the hall and started cutting men's hair. something she's been doing ever since. Now that she's in her 80's, Estine has slowed down some, now working roughly 55 hours every week.
"I even do a little jogging in the morning, and jogging i don't like but that's what the doctor tells me, but i run as hard as I can. Sometimes I have to crawl back," she laughs.
But age isn't stopping her. She's a woman who refuses to slow down, a woman who's positively El Paso.
