EL PASO (KTSM) — Christmas is just five days away and time is running out to get your packages where they need to be. Friday was the last day to ship packages to make it before Christmas without paying higher fees.
"I’m shipping Christmas gifts for my nieces and my nephews," said Mike Pena. "I need them to be there before Christmas."
But, Pena said he's not worried they won't make it on time.
"Last year, I do it and it went on time," said Pena.
Others should be, though, if they wait any longer.
Friday is the deadline for first-class mail to be delivered by December 24, for priority mail, it's Saturday and Monday is the last day to send something priority mail express for Christmas Eve delivery.
Nationwide, the postal service will deliver an estimated 500,000 million letters, packages, and cards this holiday season and the postmaster of the Boeing location in El Paso said they've shipped 25 percent more packages this season, compared to last.
But that doesn't mean people will have to wait longer, if they’re prepared.
"Make sure your package is prepared properly. Make sure it's taped up good. Make sure you print legibly so we can see the label. Make sure you apply proper postage," said Tom Billington.
The post office had extra clerks working in order to help get people out the door quickly.
If people don’t want to wait at all, they can visit their website, www.usps.com .
"They can use that to print the shipping label, to get postage get, to get their package ready and we can come pick it up for them," said Billington.
