El Paso, TX — D E Wagons Strawfly delivered a courageous performance to win the $85,000 Challenger Six Handicap at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday.
Threading his way through horses early under jockey Brayan Velazquez, D E Wagons Strawfly was able to draw within striking range of early leader Lionett heading into the stretch. The sturdy five year-old gelding by Genuine Strawfly used his powerful strides to inhale the pace setter and glide home to a comfortable win. The three-quarter length victory was his sixth overall and second stakes victory from 24 starts. D E Wagons Strawfly upset Rollockin Red in last summer’s Zia Festival 870 Championship at Ruidoso Downs.
Owned and trained by Tony Sedillo, D E Wagons Strawfly has become a serious threat in 870 yard races in New Mexico-bred stakes and with open company. He packs a terrific late punch and has consistently beaten elite company over Sunland Park soil. The 9-2 second favorite paid $11.00 to win. He earned a $51,000 paycheck pushing his career bankroll past $230,000. The winning time was 45.122 seconds.
Coronas Boy raced as the heavy 3-5 favorite coming off a rousing win in the New Mexico Cup 870 Championship at Zia Park last October. Despite breaking slowly in fifth place, the double stakes winner unleashed a wide run from off the pace and was closing with interest. The son of Mr Houston had to settle for second place under jockey Francisco Giles. He finished three-quarters of a length in front of Lionett. Super Quintons ended up fourth after a wide journey.
Sunday’s 11-race card begins at 12:15 p.m. and is propelled by a terrific edition of the $85,000 Enchantress Stakes at one mile. Two of the finest New Mexico-bred two-year-old fillies will rekindle their rivalry. Double stakes winner That’s The Idea was unbeaten in her first three outs before finishing second to Lady Genius in the Eddy County Stakes at Zia Park going one mile. That’s The Idea, a daughter of Diabolical, has earned over $222,000 in her brilliant career for owner Kirk and Judy Robison. The potent front runner is trained by Henry Dominguez.
Lady Genius counters with her own brilliance for trainer Dallas Barton. The 2013 Copper Top Futurity for fillies winner has enjoyed an exceptional freshman campaign having won two stakes and over a quarter million dollars. The Quinton’s Gold filly finished second to That’s The Idea twice and recorded her first win over that rival last time at Zia Park. The Enchantress Stakes will provide a dramatic conclusion to this great rivalry in 2013.
Rollsetroll and Ilikewinnin are also horses to watch in the Thoroughbred feature.
The $85,000 Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Handicap is Sunday’s Quarter Horse feature for the New Mexico-bred fillies and mares racing 400 yards. Aful Alibi and Get Down Bambi are coming off first and second finishes in the New Mexico Cup Fillies and Mares Championship at Zia Park on November 27.
